General Overview

Gear Meters

Spur gear meters are ideal for low flow rates, high viscosity fluids, and measurement of processes involving starts, stops and pulsation – particularly where precise measurement of fluid flow is critical.

Overview Video

“Gear Meters” belong in the Positive Displacement (PD) Flow Meter family and come in two basic designs: “Spur Gear” and “Oval Gear.” AW-Lake manufactures Spur Gear meters in which fluid travels around two round gears, and the discrete volume of liquid trapped between each gear tooth is measured as it is pushed through the meter’s internal chamber from inlet to outlet.

This precise mechanism allows for accurate volumetric measurement of the fluid flow. These meters are commonly used in industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, and fuel measurement, where precise measurement of fluid flow is critical.

Benefits

The top benefits of spur gear meters over other types, such as oval gear meters, include:

  • Higher accuracy due to the smaller volume per gear tooth
  • Greater repeatability
  • Reduced pressure drop
  • Ability to handle a wide range of viscosities and flow rates
  • Smaller footprint – the more compact design can offer better performance in applications where space limited
